MEET THE WINNERS!
JANUARY
OLLIE
Ollie was one of the boys from our “Christmas Miracle” rescue.
The one with the blizzard.
When he went off to be fostered by Jill, aka “The Beagle Lady”, we knew he’d found his forever home.
Ollie’s mama writes:
Ollie was previously known as Olaf. He is the sweetest, sassyiest, most cuddly guy ever. He loves his naps, sunbathing, chasing his siblings, and chewing up anything I may consider valuable.
He is a scholar because he spends much of his time digesting books from my book shelves.
Ollie has 2 brothers Winston and Watson, and a sister Maggie. One of his lab mates “Yuki” is the proud owner of my sister.
Rooster Cogburn Wood
As Rooster’s mama writes below, this beagle was truly one of the most fearful beagles we’ve ever rescued from a laboratory. What she doesn’t tell you is that she, Kris, is a miracle worker. Rooster moved through several foster homes before Kris raised her hand and said she’d like to try to help him to live the life he always deserved.
Rooster’s mama writes:
Rooster is a laboratory testing survivor. He was the most traumatized soul we’ve ever had.
This little fighter has turned into the biggest personality, most cuddly, playful bundle of happiness around!
Rooster is a true testament to these baby’s resilience and to what love can conquer.
Marcie
Marcie is an animal testing survivor, rescued in December of 2022 in our “Christmas Miracle” rescue.
Her mama drove all the way from Minnesota to take her home, where she now lives her life as, “a momma’s girl and spoiled rotten, but rightfully so.”
And she has a great wardrobe of sweaters and coats!
Katie
Katie, part of the “Katie and Ginny” madcap comedy duo, (see the girls in April), is an animal testing survivor, released from a laboratory along with 13 other beagle girls – some of the cutest little beagle girls ever!
We knew Katie was a spitfire from the start. She came out of her cage ready to go and claimed her diva status upon meeting her foster, Elizabeth, knowing full well she had found her forever home, way before Elizabeth knew it!
Katie is also a very good mentor for other laboratory survivors, welcoming several to her home, helping them to adjust before they go off to their own forever homes. She teaches them all the bad behavior!
FEBRUARY
Scarlett
This little beauty is a survivor of Envigo, the animal testing breeder shut down following an investigation of animal welfare violations. One of the almost 4,000 beagles freed from that facility in 2022, Scarlett was one of the youngest, and, obviously, one of the cutest!
She is also one of the luckiest: her mama found her from afar, and pretty much moved heaven and earth to make Scarlett part of her family.
Her mama writes:
Scarlett loves to go camping, going to work with her mom, sleeping under the covers, floating in her pool, and loves to steal shoes.
She is the boss of her house and has her humans completly wrapped around her little paw!
Webster
We rescued Webster from an animal testing facility last year along with five other sweet beagle boys and 14 little girl beagles.
His mama Jennifer writes:
Meet Webster, a brave beagle with a heart as big as his story. After being rescued from a pharmaceutical lab by Cage to Couch, Webster finally found freedom, love, and a family of his own. Now living his best life with Jennifer, her son Eli, and their tiny but mighty Chihuahua, Sally, Webster has discovered what it means to be truly loved.
Sadly, soon after his rescue, Webster was diagnosed with cancer. He has already undergone two surgeries and is now working closely with an oncologist to continue his fight.
Despite everything he’s endured, Webster’s tail never stops wagging—he’s proof that resilience and love can heal even the deepest wounds.
Gabe
Gabe, (on your left) is one of the 27 Envigo beagles we took into our rescue when the Envigo animal testing breeding facility was shut down following a federal investigation of animal welfare violations.
Gabe was fortunate to find his soft landing with two very experienced “animal people” who have helped him navigate life outside the cages of Envigo. They’ve had quite the journey as Gabe had and still has pretty good anxiety from his time at Envigo but he’s a shining example of what love can do.
Gabe’s even been a foster brother to several other animal testing survivors, but when Lilly came into his life, it was pretty clear from the start that this little couple was meant to be and Lilly was home.
They hold the title of Cage to Couch Cutest Couple!
Lilly
Lilly is an animal testing survivor, the lone girl in “The Magnificent Seven” rescue of seven laboratory beagles, all some of the more fearful and skittish beagles we’ve rscued.
We were told Lilly was a fear-based biter, couldn’t be touched, would bolt and snap if you attempted to put a collar or leash on her.
So, of course we thought of Kezia and Gary, Gabe’s folks, to foster her!
Lilly surprised us all with her lack of biting and snapping, and it was pretty much love at first sight with her and Gabe.
Now, to our delight and gratitude, Gabe and Lilly and Gary and Kezia – and Gideon, their feathered sibling – are one big happy family and one of our favorite “happily-ever-after” stories.
MARCH
Wilma
Wilma’s mama told us that Wilma loves to sit with her front feet crossed, and she must have known she was on to something cute, because this little beagle won our “People’s Choice Award,” with the most individual votes!
That means a whole lot of “Oohs” and “Aahs”!
Wilma was one of 14 beagle girls we rescued from a laboratory in our “Summer Love” rescue late last summer and garnered a lot of adoption applications because, well, look at that face! And she’s not just looks! Wilma is also one of the sweetest little beagles you’ll ever meet.
She chose Trish and, of course, Trish chose her, too, and now Wilma is living the beagle life we dreamed of for her!
Morrison "Mo"
An animal testing survivor from South Korea, Morrison now is living that adventure-filled, active Southern California life!
This handsome devil of a beagle gets out and about more than a lot of people we know!
Morrison’s dad wrote:
Mo Mo, as he is often called by his Furry friends, is a rescue from South Korea. He has enjoyed living in the Mountains in the winter and spending his summers in San Diego, going to his favorite dog beaches.
Mo is as sweet as they come and enjoys being his owner Mark’s best friend, often visiting his favorite breweries and resturants while in San Diego.
Mo wants to continue his best life and encourage others to support Cage to Couch.
Charlotte
Charlotte was one of the 14 beagle girls we took in from an animal testing laboratory last summer and she was one of the more anxious and skittish of those 14 girls.
Every dog is different, and many survivors have quite the long learning curve adapting to their new lives.
Charlotte’s dad, David, recently wrote us:
It is a year today that we got Charlotte and she has been such a joy in our lives.
Incredibly lively when we are out, jumping around, giving little kisses, and oh, so happy.
She is still rather skittish in the house and sometimes she needs a lot of coaxing to do things but she follows her big (fur) brother everywhere and he’s been a tremendous help to her.
As time goes by, we are confident she’s going to get more and more relaxed. And we’re so happy to see the quirky side of her come out finally.
Bailey
This beautiful beagle boy was part of our “Christmas Miracle” rescue and is named for George Bailey, the character in Frank Capra’s classic movie, “It’s a Wonderful Life.”
Bailey’s family writes:
Bailey is a shy guy, but once you earn (and I mean really earn) his trust he won’t let you sit anywhere without him being right on top of you.
In fact, Bailey’s dad says, “Bailey is practically my shadow. He sits or lays on me all the time.”
Bailey welcomed a human baby and is a very good older fur brother, the two of them get along great, and not just because babies tend to drop food on the floor
Though it’s probably a factor!
APRIL
Marlowe
Marlowe was one of 12 beagle boys we rescued from a an animal testing facility in late spring of this year. We called the rescue “The Red Beagle Detective Agency” rescue after a famous painting and named all the boys after fictional detectives. Marlowe was named for Philip Marlowe, the “hardboiled detective” central character in many Raymond Chandler novels and famously played by Humphrey Bogart in “The Big Sleep.”
Marlowe spent some time as Ginny and Katie’s foster brother before he found his humans and went off to his forever home.
His mama wrote:
Marlowe is a gentle soul whose sweetness shines through. Though a bit stubborn, Marlowe’s adorable little face melts your heart and makes your day brighter.
He loves to go on walks. He’s not distracted by squirrels but loves to stop and watch other people and their dogs, quietly taking in the world’s simple pleasures.
The happiest moments are when Marlowe curls up beside you, his warm little body radiating trust and love.
With Marlowe by your side, every day feels a little more special, and every quiet cuddle is a reminder of the unconditional happiness he brings.
Katie and Ginny
We rescued Katie and Ginny – along with 12 other of the cutest little girl beagles – in late summer 2024.
Katie already had foster mom Elizabeth wrapped around her paw and was well on her way to adopting Elizabeth, when Ginny joined them as a foster sis.
I think the girls organized against Elizabeth to convince her to adopt Ginny, too!
These girls are like that: organizers and accomplices and partners in crime and ALL the beagle antics.
Ginny and Katie are also two of the sweetest, loveliest little beagles you could ever know.
Their mama wrote:
Katie and Ginny are very bonded to the point that they clean each other’s face and ears!
They are the sweetest dogs and love to sniff everything on our daily walks.
Audrey
Audrey was found as a kitten, abandoned in an apartment parking lot.
She now lives with beagles and Slightly Askew Luna and delights in playing chase with the dogs and running on her wheel. Audrey is the only one in the house with an exercise routine she seems to stick to.
Audrey does not like to be closed in the bathroom when a human is taking a shower. She will cry and scream and pound at the door every minute she is stuck in there.
Audrey is also a very sweet cuddly cat and will tolerate kisses, too!
Spenser and Clouseau
Spenser and Clouseau are animal testing survivors, released from the laboratory and rescued together, along with 10 other little boy beagles in our “The Red Beagle Detective Agency” rescue.
Spenser is named for the titular character in the “Spenser for Hire” book and TV series, and Clouseau is named for Inspector Clouseau of The Pink Panther film series.
These two beagle detectives joined survivors Wishbone and Jaxon, and together, these four fellas are living every beagle’s dream: running and playing and beagling together, just living the lives they were always meant to live.
MAY
Luna
Luna was surrended by a breeder to the shelter at 7 weeks old with a fractured skull, including a broken jaw and nose, earning her the nickname, Slightly Askew Luna.
Raised by beagles, Luna has some very beagle-like tendencies, though she does not aroo!
Luna loves all things food.
She runs to the kitchen when she hears the whoosh of the Reddi Whip can.
If she hears the sounds of food being chopped, she is right there underfoot, hoping for a bite of celery or apple or whatever might fall her way from above.
She loves to run and play and sleeps with her feet straight up in the air.
Luna is a very sweet and sensitive dog who loves, LOVES to be close to her humans.
One of our favorite things about her, though, is how sweet and considerate Luna is of her blind and deaf senior beagle aunties.
Oh, sure, once in a while she knocks them over when she forgets how much of herself is behind her, but she sleeps next to them and keeps them warm and cautiously jumps over them on her way to her bowl!
Mei
Mei came to us from China when her rescuer passed away and all of the dogs in her care were taken in by others temporarily while they found homes for all of them. There were many! The angel to animals who had rescued our own Mini and Maria reached out to us for help, and we figured out a way to get Mei to us here in California.
Mei arrived with severe ear infections and dry eye issues, and while she seems to be totally deaf and has some vision impairment, she is absolutely one of the happiest, most joyful, sweetest and GOOFIEST dogs we’ve ever known.
Her nickname is Screech.
She is the one responsible for the wild play of Penny and Luna, as she taught them both how to play!
Mei went to the farmer’s market for the first time a few weeks ago and we managed to make it out of there without Mei grabbing food from anyone!
So that’s progress.
Penny
Penny was found as a stray and taken to the shelter as a four-month-old puppy with a broken leg.
Her human wrote:
Always with a smile on her face Penny, is the best little sister to her two legged sisters.
She loves walks, snuggles, scratches and laying in the sun.
She is very willing to be her sisters’ fashion model whenever asked: Penny loves a stylish hat.
She is not as much of a water dog as her brother Harold but will take a dip and bathe in the sunlight to work on her beach girl tan.
Shep
Don’t forget! It’s Shep’s birthday today!
JUNE
Zeus and Frida
Zeus is an animal testing survivor who was very fearful and anxious when rescued, hiding under the bathroom vanity in the hotel room on our transport trip home, delaying our departure by over an hour as we tried to coax him out.
His family writes:
Years later, he’s still getting accustomed to his life outside of the lab and learning to trust his family. Our little man loves food, long walks, marking his territory, and barking at his daddy. He loves his beagle sister, Frida, and human sister, Lucía!
What he loves the most is to spend time with his mommy who hopes to be able to hold him in her arms one day.
Zeus has made incredible progress and has a long way to go.
His family is so proud of him and adore this little guy.
Thanks Cage To Couch for saving his life and blessing him with freedom.
We love you, Zeus!
Annie Oakley Wood
Annie was surrendered to the shelter as a senior gal, in very bad shape but with the most can-do attitude we’ve ever encountered.
Annie has had multiple surgeries and the hardest part is keeping her quiet during recuperation!
This golden girl is living a beagle’s dream life with winters in Southern California and summers on her ranch in Montana.
She gets into mischief in two states and every state in between!
Her mama writes:
She is a feisty lady that fancies herself a bird dog!
She snores like a freight train and loves to cuddle.
Nala
Nala is an animal testing survivor who now spends her days basking in the love of her humans and going on adventures like kayaking!
This little nugget was one of the 14 beagle girls we took in for our Summer Love rescue, and it didn’t take her long to wrap her fosters around her little toe bean and get herself a forever home.
Bluecifer
Blue is just a year old and full of energy, but is sweet and gentle with her little blind beagle friends.
She loves everyone she meets and thinks a stranger is just a best friend you haven’t met yet.
JULY
Margie
Margie’s mom wrote:
She snores like a sailor!
This delicate little flower(!) is an animal testing survivor, one of the 14 beagle girls we took in late last summer.
Margie was named after Marge Simpson, and just like Homer, we were smitten from the moment we met her.
She is such a love of a dog, and has become quite the mentor to other animal testing survivors, acting as a foster sis to several, and welcoming MacMillan – from our rescue last spring – into her home as her brother. Margie was a foster fail when it came to Mac. They get along famously and why have one beagle in the house when you can have two?
MacMillan (Mac)
Mac’s mama tells us he loves to nuzzle.
MacMillan was one of the 12 beagle boys we took in last May from an animal testing facility, and on the day of the rescue, we fell in love with this sweet little beagle boy.
He was then and still is all about the love and cuddling.
As if the face isn’t enough to get you, Mac brings it home with just being a little teddy bear of love.
He knew he could convince Margie he’d be a perfect brother to her and indeed, he did!
Squirrel
This beautiful beagle boy was one of the 12 beagles we rescued earlier this year from an animal testing laboratory. One of the more shy and fearful of that group of beagles, he is still adapting to life outside a laboratory.
Fortunately, Squirrel found himself a human who understands him and they’re taking it all one day at a time. Sometimes two steps forward and one step back, but always with love and patience.
Squirrel is a thoughtful beagle who loves to give full body hugs and have his neck rubbed and stretches his head back and waits for neck scratches.
Squirrel LOVES zooming between the house and backyard after dinner.
Ellie and Erma
Ellie was part of our “Christmas Miracle” rescue, a December rescue for the record books, making her way through blizzards and road closures before arriving in sunny Southern California.
She was named Noelle but her foster parents soon realized that starting a name with “No” wasn’t helpful on the training front!
Ellie is pictured here with her sister Erma, a meat trade survivor.
Two little survivors of trauma who were fortunate to start their new lives with humans who offered them only kindness and patience and love.
So timid when first rescued, Ellie is now a confident little beagle who let’s everyone know when someone is at the door, and, of course, when it’s time to eat!
AUGUST
Watson
Watson was part of our “Red Beagle Detective Agency” rescue last May. We named him for Sherlock Holme’s Watson.
He was goofy and playful right from the start and it was obvious to us that Jill, “The Beagle Lady” was smitten.
Watson’s momma, Jill, writes:
Watson is the newest addition to the family.
Fun loving, playful, and simply a lovable little man.
He loves playing with his Beagle siblings Winston, Ollie, and Maggie.
Watson, an animal testing survivor, took a while to trust and believe in humans but once he did he was all in.
Watson loves his toys, balls, leather shoes, cords, sunglasses and hats just to list a few. He loves sun bathing and cuddling.
When he needs a little loving he puts his head on your knee and looks at you with those beautiful eyes. Irresistible.
Mason
You know how beagles have a reputation for being food obsessed?
Well, Mason could be the poster child for that beagle characteristic!
This CUTE beagle boy is all about the food!
Mason’s also all about the love, though, too, loving being close to his human.
We rescued this guy along with 11 other beagle boys from an animl testing facility, part of “The Red Beagle Detective Agency” rescue, and Mason was named for Perry Mason.
He’s come a long way from the early days with his foster mom when he was a very timid and fearful fella. He still doesn’t like fast movement, is fearful still of a collar and leash, but he will do almost anything for a treat – so that helps!
Luckily, Mason’s home includes laboratory survivors Shermy and Rocky, and a very experiencd and patient and loving human, so he’s learning and gaining confidence every day.
The Boys
Jaxon, Wishbone, Spencer, and Clouseau: The Boys.
All animal testing survivors.
It’s incredible how well these four beagles get along.
Wishbone was adopted first and kind of set the tone for chillness, and then he generously welcomed in Jaxon.
Then Spencer and Clouseau arrived together, rescued from an animal testing laboratory in May of this year.
Clouseau was one of the most fearful and timid beagles from that rescue.
How lucky for him that he was scooped up by Donny,
“the beagle whisperer,” and given the time and space to just be.
Now all four are free to be beagles, living the lives they were always meant to live.
Tormund
This gentle giant gets along great with his beagle siblings, and loves to destroy squeaky toys.
Tormund was rescued from an animal testing facility with 14 little girl beagles and five other fellas.
We could see he was the gentlest, sweetest beagle right when he stepped out of his crate.
Shy, though, and timid, Tormund needed time and patience to adjust to his new life.
He was adopted with his rescue mate Lyanna, and they joined two Envigo survivors, Sansa and Arya to make a pretty perfect beagle pack!
SEPTEMBER
Bluebell
Beautiful Bluebell had a rough start in life.
Her folks wrote:
Bluebell was rescued from an abusive situation by Cage to Couch. We were her foster parents but fell in love and adopted her.
She was afraid of strangers and pretty much everything. One year later, she is thriving !
Her favorite hobbies are agility, nosework and learning new tricks. She also loves her cat sister and older dog brother. She cuddles with us in bed at night and sleeps under the covers.
She is a ball of energy and loves running and playing. And true to her beagle roots, she absolutely loves food and treats!
Rosie
Rosie is wondering if you’d like to stop over for a drink and some conversation.
This little beauty was found as a stray in a desert community, still just a puppy, with bilateral cherry eye.
Rosie had three surgeries because she decided to be one of those cherry eye patients to have issues, but once she was all fixed up, she has been nothing but cute beagle and is known for her awesome “aroo”!
Even though Rosie wasn’t rescued from an animal testing facility, she and her furry sister Siobhan have welcomed several laboratory survivors into their home (along with human mom Patrice), to help them along their journey from cage to couch!
Gina
Our cover girl Gina is an animal testing survivor, one of the 14 little girls beagles we rescued from a laboratory last summer.
She is a tiny little beagle who enjoys professional massages(!) and being doted on by her humans!
Lucia
A very special day for sweet Angel Lucia with Marty and Frida.
OCTOBER
Chase
Chase was rescued from a hoarding situation, along with his two BFFs, Eddie and Molly. The three little friends were dubbed “The Big Three.”
This little guy with the wonky front paws was incredibly popular and had a lot of adoption applicants. Luckily, he caught the eye of Eric and we knew theirs would be a match for the ages. Chase is now living the good life in San Diego.
Truth be told, Chase has a much more active social life than a lot of us (me!), and probably more friends, too.
Clearly, he’s a gentleman and a scholar.
His dad writes:
Chase is the mascot of the local pub and is the sweetest guy ever!
Rockford (Rocky)
I mean, come on! Has this little beagle boy got the cute on fleek, or what?
Rocky is an animal testing survivor, one of the 12 beagle boys we rescued last summer in the rescue we named, “The Red Beagle Detective Agency” rescue.
All the boys were named after famous fictional detectives and Rocky was named after one of our faves: Jim Rockford of “The Rockford Files.”
When Rocky went off to his foster home, we were pretty sure it would be a “foster fail.”
He joined Shermy, another laboratory survivor, and his human mama Maria says Rocky is a bit of a kleptomaniac, stealing shoes and socks, and anything he can find, but “mostly steals your heart.”
Destiny (Desi)
We rescued Destiny from a laboratory along with 13 other little beagle girls and 6 boys.
This tiny little girl was a shining star right from the get-go!
Now Desi lives in Northern California and we hear she loves to soak up the sun in her backyard.
After spending the first six years of her life in a cage, I bet laying in the sun does feel pretty good to this little lady!
Marlowe
An animal testing survivor, one of 12 beagle boys we took in from a laboratory last summer, Marlowe won the spot for April but wanted to commemorate the very special day in October when he was adopted by his forever people!
NOVEMBER
Zoey and Baker
Zoey (on your left), was rescued from a precarious situation but when she met her forever mama and went off to her forever home, she never looked back! She is pictured here with Baker and her mama wrote:
These two are attached at the hip!
They taught each other how to play, love, and be part of their very own little pack with their human family.
Tormund, Lyanna, Arya, and Sansa
We rescued Tormund and Lyanna together from an animal testing facility. They are a couple of lucky beagles – adopted into a family of patient and understanding animal lovers who already had two beagles!
Their pop wrote:
Tormund and Lyanna were adopted in August 2024. They joined our Envigo Beagles, Arya and Sansa, whom we adopted in July 2022.
From the moment they met, they immediately bonded and are now inseparable.
Sammy
Sammy is one of the 27 beagles we took in from the historic Envigo rescue, when almost 4,000 beagles were released when that animal testing breeder was shut down following an investigation of animal welfare violations.
Sammy was a sweet and gentle and a little bit goofy beagle right from the start.
His mama writes:
Sammy has so much personality! And he’s a big baby. If one beagle gets pet, he wedges in between so he gets pets, too. He is a true comedian!
Sammy is living proof that rescued beagles are absolutely the best!
Shermy
We took in Shermy in late summer of 2024, one of 20 beagles released from an animal testing facility.
While Shermy was skittish and shy at first, he has now become quite the mentor for other laboratory survivors, welcoming first Rocky and then Mason into his home to help those boys adjust to their new lives in freedom.
Shermy is a very sweet beagle boy but it’s hard to get photos of him because he is constant motion!
DECEMBER
Shep
Shep is an animal testing survivor, part of our “Christmas Miracle” rescue where we traveled through a snowstorm spanning a couple of states to bring 12 beagles home, finally free from an animal testing laboratory.
Shep’s human wrote:
Shep loves food and belly rubs.
He has no sense of personal space and loves to give kisses.
Shep has been to Sequoia and Yosemite national park.
Wishbone
After spending the first years of his life in an animal testing facility, Wishbone, I think we can safely assume, got his wish: the best forever home a dog could, well, wish for!
He started it all, and then welcomed Jaxon, Spencer, and Clouseau – all animal testing survivors like himself – into his pack. A pack now called, “The Boys.”
I’m not sure how much Wishbone likes holiday dress, but he’s a pretty chill guy and would probably do almost anything for a cookie!
Chevy
Chevy was surrendered by his family after he injured his back and became paralyzed in his hind legs.
NOTHING STOPS CHEVY!
Super fast when he’s in his wheels and surprisingly fast as he scoots about chasing cats and finding any possible crumb, this little guy is all courage and strength and AFFECTION! Just a lovebug.
He answers to “Chevalier” and “Frenchie” and wants you to know he is fond of croissants!
Our Cover Girl, Gina
Gina
Little Gina was one of 14 beagle girls we took in from an animal testing laboratory last summer. We called it our Summer Love rescue before we knew how perfect that name would be for this particular rescue. 14 lovely little ladies – and six boys, too – all super cute and sweet, and all eager to start the next – much better – chapter of their lives.
Gina, often called Gina the Wonder Beagle, loves to play fetch, is very smart and curious and loves to learn, and she delights in her therapeutic massages.
You may be thinking that it sounds like Gina’s folks are quite smitten with her, and I believe you would be correct!
Author and journalist Jennifer Skiff wrote,
“Dogs, for a reason that can only be described as divine, have the ability to forgive, let go of the past, and live each day joyously.
It’s something the rest of us strive for.”
Laboratory survivors, in particular, sometimes take a little or even a long while to let go of their traumatic pasts, but their remarkable ability to forgive, to paraphrase Gilda Radner, is for me, what makes them a role model for being alive.
Forever in Our Hearts
Frankie
Frankie was from our very first rescue. One of 15 beagles we took in from the historic release of almost 4,000 beagles from the Envigo animal testing breeding facility shut down following a federal investigation into animal welfare violations.
We fell in love with Frankie the minute we met him. I can remember that it was difficult to get a photo of him because he always came in so close. Even after all he’d been through at that horrible facility, Frankie was ready to give every human he met the chance to show him there is such a thing as human kindness. All he wanted was to give love and be loved. And treats. He also wanted treats.
Frankie was adopted by a family in New Mexico and went off to live a life filled with love and blue skies and happy dances. Yes, indeed, Frankie did an adorable spinning dance… for treats, of course. He was a typical beagle!
Frankie was goofy and sweet and so loving and we are all better for having known him.
Lyric
Like a Hollywood celebrity, Lyric had two names: Fiona was her public name but to her friends and family she was known as Lyric. A lovely name for a hound with a beautiful mocha face and the softest brown eyes that could look right through you.
A typical goofy hound who could figure out how to open doors and make a little mischief, loved to sunbathe, gave the sweetest, gentlest kisses, and loved to be hugged, Lyric deserved so much more than this world gave her.
Her back story is like many others: surrendered to the shelter as a senior with multiple, serious health issues with no adoption interest.
In her last chapter, though, Lyric knew true love and was cared for by the gentlest of hands and loved on by the incredible staff at University Veterinary Center who made Lyric part of their family.
Kelly
On her passing, Kelly’s pop, Alan, wrote a sweet tribute:
Please join me in mourning the loss of Kelly, our permanent foster and mostly-blind Cage to Couch video star.
She fell victim to cancer and passed away peacefully tonight at home with assistance. Kelly was about 13…
But her life could have actually ended years ago in the Midwest, when her original human passed away – and either there was no remaining family – or they were unaable to care for her diabetic condition.
She wound up in a Kansas shelter, her health and outlook bleak if not for the Cage to Couch folk making a huge detour from a lab rescue road trip – to sweet her up and to get her diabets under control. Next, to find her a place to live.
With three fur kids already, we helped out in a pinch to provide temporary foster, only to be smitten by Kelly’s expressions of gratitude and desire to just be the best dog ever. What’s just one more loving beagle in our bungalow, right?
So between Cage to Couch and us, she got a “bonus life”: a place to be loved again… and people who will truly mourn her loss forever. What every dog deserves.
Joey
Joey’s mama, Kate wrote about her sweet boy when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge:
Joey was the best dog I never knew I needed. He came to me as a foster the Halloween before last. His previous person had passed away, and after a series of terrible events, he had endud up at a shelter. I heard his story and couldn’t bear to leave him there. I truly intended for Joey to just be a foster, but it wasn’t too long before the idea of him going to any other home was unfathomable and he became a permanent membr of my family.
Joey was the perfect companion with the sweetest and most gentle disposition. He loved people, especially my nephews. I’m pretty sure they were his favorite playmates. Every time he saw them he would yip and jump with excitement and rush off to play with them.
As long as you didn’t mind his slobber, he would play fetch for hours. He had an endless supply of energy and enthusiasm chasing that ball at the dog park or in the yard. He was obsessed with laser pointers and reflections of any sort. It was hysterical to see and one of my favorite things to watch him try to figure out.
He was the most polite dog I have ever met and his snuggles were out of this world. He loved car rides, and would often try to jump into other people’s cars when their doors were open because he loved them so much!
I describe him as pure love because that’s what he was. An angel on this earth walking on four legs. While he didn’t have nearly enough time here, my hope is that he is with his original person, who clearly loved him, on the other side of that Rainbow Bridge. Joey was a once-in-a-lifetime dog. I am so grateful to have had him in my life.
I will miss my sweet, sweet boy every day.
Abby
Sweet little Abby, with the slightly crabby little face, was an animal testing survivor, released to us along with 13 other adorable beagle girls.
Heartbreakingly, Abby passed away suddenly soon after we rescued her.
We mourn Abby’s passing and grieve for what could and should have been for this little beagle girl.
Her death reminds us of all those who never get the chance to live lives outside of the laboratory and what could and should be for all of those still suffering in cages.
Abby, you broke our heart, sweet baby.
Hobbs
In November of 2022, Hobbs made a road trip from North Carolina, leaving four years of cruel extreme confinement and abuse behind him, so eager and happy to start a new life in sunny Southern California.
I wish you call could have known him. Hobbs was truly one in a million.
So brave and oh, so stubborn, unassuming yet also demanding, food obsessed and quietly affectionate. Hobbs just wanted to be a little bit loved, to be a little bit important to someone, content to just be around and be part of a family.
J. R. Ackerley wrote, “A dog has one aim in life… to bestow his heart.” And that is what sweet Mr. Hobbs did indeed do.
We’ll never forget the bestest boy with the beautiful soulful eyes and velvet ears.
Boris
A more perfect example of a beagle you could not find: courageous and stoic, food obsessed and playful and full of mischief, Boris stole our hearts.
This fella started his life in a laboratory, then was surrendered to the shelter at 14 years old after clearly suffering neglect. But his last year? His last year, Boris knew nothing but love, and knew his life mattered, all thanks to Nicholas and Emma, a young couple who learned of Boris’ story and need for a home, and were determined to fill Boris’ final year with love and adventures and fun.
Though he had a huge mass under his front paw that even after surgery caused him to limp severely, and with arthritis and heart disease, Boris wasn’t ready to give up. In fact, Boris was very puppy-like and playful and capable of ALL the beagle antics! He loved walks and camping and playing with toys, and, of course, Boris loved treats and meal time.
We were so sad to say goodbye to Boris, but very grateful for getting the chance to know him and to meet Nicholas and Emma because of Boris.
Mini
Mini is included in this calendar in honor of her being the reason for the existence of Cage to Couch.
Our first laboratory survivor, when we adopted Mini in 2018 she had just been rescued from animal testing. She was blinded in the lab, and she was 10 years old. We went to meet her, thinking we would just foster, but when I held her for the first time, I knew she was ours. Ours to love and spoil to try and make up for 10 years of misery.
That decision changed my life. Knowing and loving her, it was unfathomable to me that others like her were suffering in cages, and the desire to help get more out and into loving homes was overwhelming and would lead me to found, with my sister, Cage to Couch.
Mini gave my life purpose, but mostly I’m grateful for getting to love her, the sweetest little soul with the softest tummy and most kissable ears.
In almost eight years of having Mini with us, she never ran. Sometimes on leash, when she felt safe, she could get a cute little trot going, but never running. No joyful zoomies. No scampering. Her blindness made her cautious. How could someone be so cruel to rob Mini of that joy? To take something so precious – sight – from a living being?
Broken hearted, we said goodbye to Mini in November of this year.
I like to think of her now, perfectly healed, running and playing the way she was always meant to.
